a16z partners describe broader Frontier mandate spanning AI, robotics and crypto
Chris Dixon said a16z crypto is expanding into a16z Frontier, with a broader investment scope. He and fellow partners argued that AI creates opportunities for startups and that open models and crypto could support new digital markets.

In a podcast dated 2026-10-22, Chris Dixon said a16z crypto is expanding into a16z Frontier, broadening its investment scope beyond blockchain to areas including hardware, robotics, synthetic biology and immersive media.
Dixon, Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz argued that advances in AI are opening opportunities across software and physical technology. Horowitz acknowledged that large technology companies have early advantages in distribution, computing budgets and enterprise customers, but said their existing business models could constrain their response to new competitors.
The partners presented open-source AI and cryptographic networks as ways to counter concentrated technological power. Dixon also envisioned autonomous agents using wallets and smart contracts to transact, describing a possible future market rather than an established outcome.
