Google said in a research update on 2026-10-23 that Nexus AI’s tool operates in approximately 40 healthcare facilities, where clinicians have evaluated more than 25,000 chest X-rays. According to the company, the tool screens for lung diseases including tuberculosis in as little as 45 seconds.

Google also said Indonesia’s Ministry of Health is fine-tuning MedGemma and MedSigLIP on domestic chest X-rays to support an initiative targeting 50,000,000 screenings annually. The company says local infrastructure allows patient data to remain within national borders; the screening figure is a goal.

The Nexus tool flags findings suggestive of TB for further investigation, with healthcare professionals retaining final clinical decisions. Google said miners flagged during screening at South Africa’s Mponeng Gold Mine can be referred for confirmatory molecular testing.
